Starting an email subject line with “RE:” when it’s not a direct reply is almost rant worthy in a blog post…

oh very dear.

I received this email:

Hi My Names (insert name) and I’m a photographer based in England. I’ve recently been introduced to your magazine Fake for a while now and I’m impressed with what you have achieved, I particularly like the piece you shot in the in the current issue. I work largely with fashion and portraits and I think my work would fit well in your magazine and as such I’d really love the opportunity to produce some work for you.

I often shoot using a very intimate style that blurs the lines between fashion and portrait but I think that’s what makes my work unique and gives it its value. My work isn’t particularly slick or clean, it’s often dark and dirty but it’s always personal, personal to me and personal to whom I’m photographing, finding that that is where this level of work is to be found, born from the intimacy of the privileged relationship between photographer and subject. And this is what I practice, a dirty intimacy.

I shot for the likes of Dazed and Confused, Strumpet and Pink, Back Yard Recordings and I’d love to shoot for you.

I’ve attached a small PDF of my work I’d be really grateful if you could take a look and tell me what you think.

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Regards

My reply.

Hi (insert name),

Thanks for the email. It is with good intentions that I would like to offer some advice. Cater your emails to the company you are emailing. This will make the likeliness of getting a good, honest reply. An email for hiring you, not giving feedback, such as this one. Generic, copy and pasted emails can be spotted immediately, and won’t go in your favour. For instance, what shot that was in the current issue? Where in England? We are a UK only magazine and if you have been aware of us “for a while now” you would know this.

We can appreciate that it’s time consuming getting yourself out there and emailing around, but it would be better to assess your portfolio, and carefully choose who you send it to, in order to receive a good response that won’t waste your time.

You have a nice portfolio but it’s not the sort of style that we use.

Good luck, and I hope that you take my advice on board.

Kerry

Who on earth owns up to owing someone £20?

Let alone your younger brother!

Great to see some of our past contributors have been entering @ohh_deer’s competition ‘Stuck on Repeat’ that we recommended. The competition ends 1st Feb so there’s plenty of time to get your entry in. Above are two entries from two brilliant ladies we’ve had the pleasure of working with.

Pippa Stewart, we featured in Issue One, for three different prints. We have also used the print shown above in the double page spread, in our promotional material seen on our online shop.

Amy Deacon, we featured in Issue Two. Her garments were featured in the fashion editorial ‘Alias’, as well as a page break (as seen above) and for use in promotional material.

Chuck Close.

When I was studying GCSE art I was obsessed with this artist, and the progression of his work/style as he coped with his debilitating illness.

Sick of hearing people moaning about ‘working for free’ and moaning about people moaning about ‘working for free’.
